Opterus of Loveland wins coveted role in upcoming business / government collaboration

Loveland, Colorado — June 4, 2019 — Opterus, Loveland-based innovator of deployable and unfolding spacecraft structures, has been chosen as one of seven companies to contribute to the third Catalyst Space Accelerator cohort, a collaborative program designed to transfer technology from the commercial market to the government and vice versa.

The U.S. Air Force has long known that the greatest mission success comes through collaboration and idea-sharing spanning business, government, academic, and venture capital organizations. Toward that end was created the Air Force Research Laboratory Space Vehicles Directorate Catalyst Accelerator, a defense and national security industry accelerator located in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

The Accelerator uses scheduled gatherings, a.k.a. “cohorts,” for structured collaboration. The 2019 cohort focuses on Resilient Commercial Space Communications. During the semi-residential, 12-week program, Opterus, along with other participating organizations, will work together to augment, supplement, backup, complement, and/or improve current space communications capabilities.

Opterus was selected because of breakthroughs in transitioning spacecraft design from bulky mechanisms to miniaturized high-strain composite structures. Specific to the focus of the 2019 cohort, Opterus’ new deployable solid-surface parabolic reflector antenna technology is poised to dramatically change small spacecraft communications.

“We’re thrilled with the recognition,” said Thomas Murphey, Chief Executive Officer of Opterus, “but what’s most important is the opportunity for the kind of game-changing partnership on which we’ve built this organization.”
