Opterus Achieves Unparalleled Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) Contract Capture Rate
Leveraging small business technology and agility to rapidly advance U.S. capabilities in space

Loveland, CO – October 28, 2019 – Opterus achieves outstanding capture rate for SBIR proposals awarded in 2019, winning 90% of awards proposed. Dr. Thomas W. Murphey, President and CEO of Opterus, announced that 19 of 21 proposals submitted were selected for award. Awards were made possible by both DoD and NASA Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) contracts available only to businesses with fewer than 500 employees. Typical DoD and NASA SBIR Phase I proposals are extremely competitive, with capture rates typically around 15%. Opterus was able to surpass the average capture rate six-fold. Opterus is pleased to develop the next generation of spacecraft architectures for the American warfighter and promote the advancement of American scientific space exploration capabilities. It is an honor to aid in the modernization of the USA’s space infrastructure. We strive to enable and advance the capabilities of the United States in space, especially as the domain becomes increasingly contested.
The SBIR program, coordinated by the Small Business Administration, is an increasingly critical avenue of technological development for the government and is extremely stimulating for the growth of small businesses. It cannot be stressed enough that American small businesses are extremely capable of rapid and agile development of critical technology for the advancement of national defense and scientific discovery in the space domain. As one of these small businesses, Opterus hopes to leverage the opportunity to solve the nation’s most difficult engineering challenges with new and disruptive technology that is developed rapidly and at tremendously lower cost than prior art technologies.
